These remote mintes are siituated at the summit of Honister pass (1167 ft) between Keswick and Buttermere,
\r\n
\r\nThe Yew Crag Tramway, the remains of which are clearly seen in the photograph, was built around 1879, and extended downwards in 1926, and used to transport slate from the mine workings to the road. Before the tramway was built the slate was transported down the fellside on wooden sleds. The tramway was a great improvement, and amazingly, it remained in use until the 1960s
\r\n
\r\nThere is still a considerable amount of slate left within Yew Crag but because of the fractured nature of the rock the area is extremely dangerous to work.
\r\n","photographer":"","width":800,"id":9007024,"height":533,"takendate":"","payment_groups_id":"","server_id":1,"link":"photo_9007024.html","src":"2007ats2497a_honister_1.jpg","home":0,"purchase_instruction":"","galleries_id":131688,"gallery":0});
